Poets 11: An Anthology of Poems from the San Francisco Poets 11 Readings

Poets 11: An Anthology of Poems from the San Francisco Poets 11 Readings Selected and Introduced by San Francisco Poet Laureate Jack Hirschman

Poets 11 is a collection of 99 poems by the most interesting, vital and engaging young poets in San Francisco. The Poets 11 project was conceived by Poet Laureate Jack Hirschman, and designed to encourage the work of the undiscovered poets of San Francisco. Work was solicited from poets throughout the 11 supervisorial districts of the city in an open submission process. The poems were read by Jack Hirschman and he selected 3 poets from each district to read at a public event in the local library for their district. The events ran from July of 2006 to August of 2007 with a reading each month in a different district. A final event was held in the Koret Auditorium at the San Francisco Main Library celebrating all 33 poets. The anthology has 3 poems by each of the 33 selected poets in a 198 page celebration of the diverse poetic voices of the City of San Francisco. Published by Friends of the San Francisco Public Library, San Francisco, California, 2007

"A Free Library in This City" - Wiley, Peter Booth

"Whereas, We, the citizens of San Francisco ... do most heartily approve
of the project about to be inaugurated for the establishment of
A Free Library in this City, and do pledge to the same our hearty and
united support".

With these above words, an idea was born in San Francisco, an idea that
eventually - well over a century later - achieved its apotheosis in the
building of the New Main Public Library. This state-of-the-art cultural
institution now stands as a tribute to all those who had the vision to conceive the idea and the energy to nourish this - through eras of triumph and tragedy.

With masterful insight, Peter Booth Wiley narrates the fascinating story of
this idea, tracing the concept of the library back to the origins of writing and human history itself, through the ages of antiquity to the first American libraries and beyond ... to San Francisco.

Embroidered into the thread of the main narrative are 25 specially commissioned essays from the Bay Area's leading literary figures, accompanied by original artwork by noted local illustrators.
