"Libraries are great. I get a new book every time I go. And sometimes, my mom let's me check out a DVD."

Library Fan!

Children love Libraries, which is why Friends supports Library programs that help children develop a love of learning and discovery. Whether through lap sit readings, unique performers, or more structured programs like Summer Reading Club , Friends sponsors programs that open young minds and imaginations.

Young children are not the only ones to benefit from wonders of libraries. Each year, thousands of latchkey teens stay off the street thanks to the Main Library and 26 branch libraries. Friends sponsors programs that engage and encourage these young adults and keeps them focused on a positive future. Through the Library's Teen Services – including exceptional programs like High School & Beyond and truly unique services like Kidpower, where teens volunteer to help young children read – Friends keeps thousands of City teens active and involved.

Summer Reading

Too often children stop reading once school is out for summer. Friends helps to reverse this trend by sponsoring the Library's Summer Reading Program, which reaches over 9,000 children in all San Francisco neighborhoods. The program motivates children to read as many books as they can from June to August. Summer Reading not only fosters a love of reading for these children, but also a love of the library.

Teen Summer Reading 2005

Friends sponsored Teen Summer Reading 2005, which will be held at 25 different locations of the San Francisco Public Library this summer. Teens will read for 10, 20 or 30 hours, and record their thoughts about what they read on comment cards.  Prizes are awarded for each ten hours of reading and include gift certificates to Borders Books and Music, Ben & Jerry’s ice cream coupons, free books, amusement park passes, free arts classes, and more!  Plus all teens will have a chance to win grand raffle prizes at the end of the program.
